Wolves started off their 1960 – 1961 league campaign in fine form coming on the back of winning two league titles in the previous three years. Their campaign proved to be a fine one as they were in emphatic form in the top flight, coming narrowly close to winning the title as they finished off in third position. They crashed out of the FA Cup in the third round as they suffered a defeat against Huddersfield Town.
The 1961 – 1962 league season saw a huge decline in Wolves football fortunes as they crashed down the league finishing the campaign off in a disappointing 18th position. Stan Cullis led his Wolves side to a tremendous improvement during the 1963 – 64 season as they were in emphatic form finishing the campaign off in fifth position, it also proved to be the last season that saw Stan Cullis in charge at the club as Andy Beattie took over at the post at the start of the 1964 – 1965 season. His first and only campaign in charge proved to be a debacle as they ended the campaign off in 21st position, in turn demoting the club to the second division. They enjoyed a decent run in the FA cup, reaching the quarter finals, losing against Manchester United in a thrilling 5-3 encounter.
