Wolves were in their fourth season back in the first division by the time of the 1970 – 1971 campaign and they had now established themselves as a strong force in English football again as they finished the campaign off in a mighty fourth place.
The 1971 – 1972 campaign saw Wolves crash out of the FA Cup in the third round as they narrowly suffered defeat against Leicester City, however the pleasure from their campaign arrived form a fine ninth position finish in the league at the end of the season.
The 1972 – 1973 first division campaign was a great one for Wolves in comparison to previous years, finishing the campaign off in a convincing fifth position. They enjoyed an incredible run in the FA Cup, reaching the semi finals of the competition, however suffering defeat against Leeds United. They also enjoyed a great run in the league cup, reaching the last four, however losing on penalties against Tottenham Hotspur.
Wolves enjoyed success at the end of the 1973 – 1974 season as they won the league cup final against Manchester City at Wembley. Billy McGarry saw his side finish the following two seasons off in 12th position on both occasions and reaching the last sixteen of the league cup, suffering defeat against Mansfield Town.
