The 1975 – 1976 campaign proved to be a debacle for Wolverhampton Wanderers as they finished the season off in a disappointing 20th position, in turn demoting the club to second division football. Sammy Chung took over form the managerial post in 1976 and it proved to be a fantastic season for the club as they were in emphatic form in the second division, finishing the season off as second division winners. John Richards and David Wagstaffe were in fine form for the club, helping them gain promotion back into o the top flight.
Wolves did not find life easy in the top flight, finishing off thier first to years in the elusive first division in 15th and 18th place respectively.
They enjoyed a fine run in the FA Cup during the 1978 – 1979 campaign as they were emphatic in the competition, reaching the semi finals, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at Villa Park.
The 1979 – 1980 campaign saw Wolves reach the final of the league cup and they disposed Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest side 1-0 at Wembley to win the tournament for the second time in six years. Andy Gray scored the winning goal for the team.
