Sammy Chapman took charge at Wolves during the 1985 – 1986 season and he could not prevent the Wolverampton Wanderers slump from continuing as they were poor in the third division finishing the season off in a very disappointing 23rd position, demoting the club in to fourth division football for the first time in their football history.
The 1986 – 1987 campaign was notable for the arrival of goal scoring machine, Steve Bull at the club and Bull did not disappoint, instantly scoring as Wolves reached the play offs.
Steve Bull scored more than fifth goals during the 1987 – 1988 season as they were in emphatic form in the fourth division, winning the championship.
Andy Mutch also came into o the fore of the Wolves side during the 1988 – 1989 season and made an outstanding strike partnership with Bull up front again as they were both inspirational up front for the club as they won the third division league title as Brain Little saw his Wolves side heroically climb in to the second division. Steve Bull made his debut for England in a match against Scotland, despite still being a third division player at the time.
The 1989 – 1990 campaign astonishingly saw Wolves close to reaching a play off position as they finished the campaign off in tenth place. The Steve Bull and Andy Mutch partnership worked once again for the club.
The 1989 – 1990 Wolves football team included players like, Mark Kendall, Tom Bennett, Mark Venus, Shane Westley, Keith Downing, Gary Bellamy, Tim Steele, Paul Cook, Steve Bull, Andy Mutch and Robert Dennison.
