Wolves came in to the 1990 – 1991 season with hope of earning a promotion in to the top flight, however they could only manage a mid table finish despite having England international, Steve Bull at their disposal. Wolves crashed out of the FA cup in the third round as they suffered defeat against the up and coming Cambridge United and lost against Hull City in the second round of the league cup.
The following two seasons saw Wolves finish off in a very decent 11th place finish. They crashed out of the 1992 FA cup, suffering defeat against Nottingham Forest and scraped out of the fourth round of the 1993 FA, suffering a narrow defeat against Bolton wanderers.
The 1993 – 1994 league campaign saw the Wanderers finish of fin a very creditable eighth position, which saw them narrowly miss out on a play off birth. They also enjoyed a fine run in the FA Cup as they reached the last eight of the cup competition, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against future FA Cup Finalists, Chelsea in the last eight. They also crashed out of the league cup in the second round as they suffered defeat against Swindon Town in the cup competition.
