The 1998 – 1999 season saw Wolves finish off in seventh position in the first division, at the end of the campaign they purchased Kevin Muscat from Crystal Palace and he soon made an impression at Wolves during the 1999 – 2000 league season as they finished it off in a strong seventh position, once again narrowly missing gout on a play off birth.
They were unfortunate in the FA cup as they finished off their campaign in the fourth round of the competition as they suffered a defeat on penalties against Sheffield Wednesday. Their young teenage prodigy, Robbie Keane departed the club during the season for Coventry City.
The 2000 – 2001 campaign saw Wolverhampton Wanderers settle for a 12th position finish; however everything came good for Wanderers during the 2001 – 200 campaign as they finished of fin third position, which in turn earned them promotion via the play off final.
Colin Cameron signed for the club at the beginning of the campaign and he proved to be an inspirational purchase as Dave Jones took Wolves in to the premiership.
